Julia Hashem (b. 2001) is a Lebanese artist based in Beirut. She holds a BA in Studio Art from the American University of Beirut and an MA in Fine Art from the University of the Arts London. Hashem has exhibited her work internationally in Beirut, London, Paris, Slovenia, and Bahrain.
Working predominantly in painting, often informed by photography, Hashem’s practice is rooted in her Lebanese identity, drawing on architectural and urban references while exploring the particular qualities of light and space from the cities she has inhabited. Her earlier work focused on the temporality of buildings and the ways they shape and restrict human relationships.
Her current work turns inward, exploring the intimacy of domestic spaces through a monochromatic lens. These paintings, grounded in acts of self-beholding, inhabit spaces imbued with personal resonance. Within this shift, the female body emerges subtly—not as a direct subject, but as a quiet undercurrent, a memory pressed into the fabric of familiar environments.
